repercussions

You know there is one thing I seem to be quickly understanding, no matter how far the distance you have traveled from you past, notice not how long, but how far, you will constantly face the consequences of your past decisions. Now, I understand who you were doesn’t make you who you are, but to the people that don’t know who you are, all they have to go by is who you were. I’m 26 years old, I have dreams, and I have goals I wish to obtain. One is settling down, creating a future family with my future wife. But I want to take care of my family and my wife, whomever that may be, but that requires a job, and not just any job, but a good job. One that is steady, good paying, insurance, and a job that has hours to be worked, without the fear of being laid off, which is happening a lot these days. Doesn’t seem like a whole lot to want, but it is a bit tougher for me then most. I went in for an interview the other day for a pretty decent job, drove an hour to get there, and after 5 minutes into the interview and one question, interview over. What was that question you might be wondering? Well, it was a question as simple as, what’s your social security number? Now it was very evident why they would want that, obviously they wanted to run a background check. It seems this question is about as far as I get with interviews these days. I understand I have some trust among society that needs to be redeveloped, and honestly can’t say I would hire myself, if the situation were reversed. I mean would you hire a convicted criminal that you knew nothing about, even if his convictions were not so recent. Discouraging to say the least, I guess I’m just patiently and willingly waiting for GOD to give me that one chance, to reprove myself. He’s the only one that can do it, so it is to Him I pray. I pray He soften the hearts of my interviewers. And I know He will, in His time, and when the job arrives at my doorstep that He placed there. I mean I can safely say, I don’t think Gods plan is for me to not have a job for the rest of my life. And is it possible that I could even lie when they ask me if I’ve ever been arrested, to my knowledge there’s not a whole lot that is still weighing my record down, so the answer is yes, I could lie. But if I have to lie to get a job, I don’t really think that’s the job God put there for me, I highly doubt, I will have to lie to get the job He wants me to have. So while I continue to search and diligently look, I also continue to pray, that this be the day, where someone might look past my record, and see the honestly that I lie before them, and give me the job I so earnestly need. While, I am discouraged about it, I know where my faith is and I know the power God has, so I don’t stress too much, but nevertheless still a battle, thanks for your time.

  1. I am one of those atheists that always disagree with Tom.

However, on a human level your story is quite touching.

I hope you get a job.

I have a record too, and have never been asked, but if I was I don’t deny I would lie.
(But I don’t live in USA , so can’t do direct comparison).

    Good luck.

    • I appreciate your courtsy and support man, I’m sure it will come, just takes time I guess.

  2. Just a further point, re being out of work – in the UK you get state benefits for a practically unlimited time, which I know is certainly not the case in USA. (my English uncle has lived in Connecticut for longer than you’ve lived in America !- and he has told me how harsh it is by comparison to Europe, if you’re jobless).

Putting aside differences in our beliefs and God for a second – we may all mercilessly critisize Tom , but I know for you , from what you’ve written about him in particular , and the church in general, it is a great support for you , so what you may lack in Unemployment benefit you have it made up in non-monetary ways, with your church community.

Cheers, as we say over here.

    • Dude, that means a lot for real, and yes jobless in America is well, put it this way, there are no jobs, taxes go up, gas goes up, pay stays the same. But when I finally do get an interview, well you see how it usually turns out for me. And cheers back to you bud.

  3. Good stuff, Shaun. And like I’ve always said, if we make the effort we should, God will bless the effort. It may not always come when we want it too, but with God, we know he’s always right on time.

As always, praying for you man.

  4. They are not supposed to ask for your SS at the first interview only after they have offered you a job.

  5. well, actually it’s a staffing agency, so they are allowed to. I wish they weren’t, but it is what it is.

  6. Did they say they would not consider you for jobs or are you assuming they will not because of your past? Perhaps they will?

  7. Dena, they actually it was a 4 hour orientation, in which throughout the duration of that 4 hours, I was supposed to put an application for that jobs, take an aptitude test, and watch some videos, after 10 mins of being there, they said that due to my past I couldn’t be considered and staying would be a waste of my time.
